BLUE SKY MANTAU – Surabaya

From Balikpapan to Surabaya, the legendary famous Blue Sky Mantau is now available in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya.

Blue Sky Mantau was created and introduced at Blue Sky Hotel Balikpapan back in 1987 and it has become the most popular and must-buy food souvenir from Balikpapan, then due to many requests, starting June 2017 Blue Sky Mantau has opened an outlet in Surabaya, precisely at Juanda International Airport Terminal 1.

Recently AnakJajan had a layover in Surabaya and we had a chance to visit the newly opened Blue Sky Mantau Surabaya, it’s located inside Terminal 1 at the restaurant area right after check-in/ before boarding gates.

The shop can be easily seen from its catchy yellow signage and also huge display of the white round mantau.

Price for Mantau is IDR 15k/ piece or IDR 85k/ half dozen, as a companion, they provide black pepper sauce for free, or two options of side dish; Sapi Cabe Kering or Chili Beef IDR 90k, and Ayam Cabe Kering or Chili Chicken IDR 65k. You can also purchase package of Mantau with side dish; IDR 170k (Mantau & Sapi Cabe Kering), or IDR 145k (Mantau & Ayam Cabe Kering).

Love how well designed the box is, it makes a great gift or souvenir for relatives.

For immediate consumption, you can ask them to deep fried and cut the mantau, but if you plan to enjoy it on the next few days, it’s suggested to steam/ deep fried the mantau on your own right before consumption for best texture.

The mantau itself can be enjoyed steamed or deep fried, unlike other mantau out there, Blue Sky Mantau has its own distinctive or unique taste with more dense texture (in a good way), it’s super huge you can slice the bun into 4 slices.

AnakJajan personally love the deep fried version to get the crunchy golden outer while soft moist texture on the inside, one major plus point is that the mantau won’t get greasy at all after being deep fried.

Both chili chicken and beef are cooked in thick savory sauce with appetizing aroma from garlic, chili and spring onion, it goes really well with the dense moist mantau. After trying the mantau, AnakJajan can totally understand why people rave about it, it’s unique, tasty and one of a kind indeed!
