Following our previous trip to South Korea, somehow without realizing, AnakJajan’ve been doing food hunting mission to find Korean food hidden gems in Jakarta and the surrounding areas, to find recommended restaurants with majority Korean customers and recently Amaroo Restaurant is one of our favorite finds with Jajangmyeon or Korean black bean noodle dish as their signature and most popular dish.

Basically there are tons of Korean food dishes that are worth to try, you can check our Korean Food Guide for more info about it. For amazing jokbal and smoked duck dish, Seorak Chuoetang/ Bumbu Satu is highly recommended, then in Cheong Dam Garden you can find scrumptious bossam. Both restaurants are seriously a gem for Korean food lovers and AnakJajan have been lucky to find great authentic Korean restaurants like these.

There are not many places in town that serve Jajangmyeon, one of the most popular ones would be Legend of Noodle in Senopati, then Jjang Korean Noodle & Grill serves Halal version of Jajangmyeon.

Since AnakJajan were craving for Jajangmyeon, we asked for our friends for recommendations, a friend of ours recommended Amaroo Restaurant, then a few of Korean living in Jakarta recommended Ga Ya Sung in Dharmawangsa area, so AnakJajan have put both restaurants in our list and finally we had a chance to visit Amaroo.

Amaroo is a Korean & Chinese Restaurant located in Amartapura Apartment complex in Karawaci where lots of Korean live there. During our visit, majority of their customers are Korean, the restaurant looks quite old with simple dining room decor and open kitchen where we can see and hear the chef cooking fiercely with their wok. The restaurant offers great variety of Korean-Chinese dishes but if you’re not familiar with the name of Korean dishes, you might find the ordering process quite troublesome since the menu only has Korean names with minimum explanation.

Jajangmyeon (Cajang Myun) IDR 60k
Jajangmyeon is a Korean Chinese cuisine dish therefore you can find this kind of dish mostly in Chinese restaurants in Korea, it’s a noodle dish topped with thick sauce made of salty black soybean paste or chunjang, diced pork and vegetables.

The portion of Jajangmyeon in Amaroo is very generous using medium thick noodle with elastic springy texture, as for topping, you can find chunks of pork meat, onion and small cubes of sweet potato for extra sweet taste and texture. The sauce has a great consistency and great balance of flavor, savory with subtle sweetness. SERIOUSLY SOOOOO GOOD!!

Update: we’ve been visiting Amaroo for a few times and their Jajangmyun is consistently delicious. Please ASK FOR EXTRA CHUNJANG SAUCE and then mix it thoroughly with the Jajangmyun for extra flavorkick.

It’s basically Jajangmyun but they re-cook the sauce on the wok with extra onion, that explains the drier sauce consistency and extra wok-fire aroma in it. It’s delicious but AnakJajan personally prefer more sauce like the original one. Tips: ask for extra chunjang sauce and mix it with the noodle for more rich taste.

Cajang Bab IDR 60k
Instead of the regular noodle one, you can enjoy the black bean sauce with rice and IT’S DAYUM!! It comes with sunny side up egg and one bowl of spicy seafood soup (similar soup base with jjampong).

Sweet and Sour Pork (Tang Su Yuk) IDR 120k (small)
Tangsuyuk is all time favorite dish for Korean people to accompany Jajangmyeon, deep fried pork served with thick vinegar-based sweet and sour sauce. Here in Amaroo, this dish is available in small, medium or large portion. Even though AnakJajan ordered small portion, it’s huge enough for sharing up to 4 person. The tangy taste is just perfect to balance any other dish.

Sa Chun Tang Su Yuk IDR 120k (Small)
Instead of original Tang Su Yuk, me and Mr. Jajan prefer Sa Chun or Spicy Tang Su Yuk. Instead of just sour, we get more balanced flavor, it’s spicy, sweet and sour, MASISSEOYO!!

Mapo Tofu Rice (Mapa Dubu Bab) IDR 70k
The portion is crazily huge, diced soft tofu stir fried with vegetables, minced meat and shrimps in thick broth and served with rice. It was a very comfortable dish with great aroma from the wok-fry cooking process.

Jjampong (Cam Pong) IDR 60k
Noodle soup dish with spicy seafood broth, for this dish, they use the same noodle as jajangmyeon with medium thickness. The broth was packed with umami flavors with rich seafood taste and mild level of spiciness, inside the broth there are generous amount of clams, small prawns, chayotes, onion, etc.

Overall, Amaroo is another great finding, even though it’s located quite far in Karawaci area, but honestly it’s worth the drive, affordable price, great flavor and generous portion. In terms of taste, portion, texture, AnakJajan must say that Amaroo’s Jajangmyeon is certainly one of the best (perhaps NO.1 THE BEST!) you can find in Jakarta-Tangerang area. MASISSEOYO!
