Summer in Japan might be the less popular season because it’s hot and humid but aside from that it’s also the season of festivals, fireworks, and lots of delicious summer edition food. AnakJajan are going to share with you 8 Reasons or Things to Do in Japan during Summer in case if you’re still considering whether you want to visit Japan during summer time.
Out of 4 season in Japan: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, me and Mr. Jajan’s favorite season would be Spring especially Cherry Blossom season, we also love winter time there especially the lights illumination. Summer and Autumn are also interesting because each season has its own charm.
Even though I personally hate hot summer holiday, surprisingly the whole experience of our Japan summer holiday left me a deep impression and I kinda enjoyed it.
WHEN IS SUMMER IN JAPAN??
Summer usually starts from June to August, sometimes until mid-September depending on the prefecture.
SUMMER WEATHER
Summer in Japan is indeed very hot and humid with high chance of rain. Normally the temperature is around 28 until 40 degrees Celsius so make sure to bring light summer clothing, umbrella, hat, sunglasses, and of course sunblock with high SPF.
Ok, here you go, list of Reasons or Things to Do in Japan during Summer:
1. YUKATA
Nothing beats summer holiday memories than exploring the city and visiting festivals while wearing yukata or Japanese traditional summer clothing, just like the the movies or manga.
2. SUNFLOWER/ HIMAWARI
Sunflower is the typical flower of summer and it blooms from July until August normally so make sure to visit sunflower fields on your summer trip.
3. SUMMER FESTIVAL
Some of the biggest and most festive festivals in Japan happen in summer like lantern festival, massive parade, dance festival, etc.
During our visit, AnakJajan were lucky being able to experience the summer festival in Kyoto and Ueno, Tokyo, it was the most lively festival experience we’ve ever had, so many things to see, do and eat.
4. SUMMER FOOD
There are many summer food available like cold noodle or somen, cold beer, kakigori or shaved ice dessert, etc to try. The hot sunny day will make you hungry all the time.

Make sure to enjoy various food and snack from food stalls during festival like karaage, yakisoba, okonomiyaki, etc.
5. ICE CREAM
Ice cream every day is a must! Enjoy lotsa ice cream while you’re there, it’s perfect to cool the body when the summer heat is too much and of course ice cream in Japan is tasty!
On our summer trip, AnakJajan had at least one ice cream a day, sometimes three times a day. One of the most memorable one would be the 8 Layer Ice Cream in Daily Chico https://anakjajan.com/2015/07/21/daily-chico-8-layers-of-ice-cream-nakano-tokyo/.

6. LOTUS FLOWER
Lotus flowers usually bloom in late summer (late July to early September). During our visit in mid July, AnakJajan spotted a huge Lotus pond in Ueno Park and some of the flowers were blooming already.
7. FIREWORK/ HANABI
If spring has hanami, then summer has hanabi or firework festival. The firework game in Japan is seriously strong! You’ll be able to witness one of the most spectacular firework display, one of the most popular spots would be Sumida River in Tokyo, it usually happens in the last Saturday of July.
8. SEASONAL FRUIT
Summer is the time to enjoy summer fruits like big and fresh red cherries, peaches, watermelon, etc. Make sure to enjoy momo or peach while they’re in season because it’s extremely juicy, sweet, and very fragrant.
Hopefully the reasons above are enough to convince you to visit Japan in summer. Yes it’s hot and humid, but it’s also fun!
