RECOMMENDED PASTEL IN JAKARTA: Strawberry Ufo, Ma’cik, Pastellia, etc

Strawberry Pastel Ufo

In mission to find the best tasting pastel in town, AnakJajan visited and tried quite a lot of it, finally the list has been completed. Here you go, the highly requested list, Recommendation for Best Pastel in Jakarta.

Pastel Wawa
Pastel Kurnia at Kedai Ibu Djoko

Pastel is a kind of classic “jajanan” or snack that we always love. It might be not as popular as other classic snacks but it has its own charm. In neighbor countries like Singapore or Malaysia, this kind of delicacy is popularly called Curry Puff mainly because they use curry filling, but here in Indonesia the most classic Pastel contains savory filling like potato, carrot, chicken, and glass noodle.

Ma’Cik

For us Pastel gotta have a crunchy thin skin, then flavorful generous filling and served with both green chili and peanut sauce, that’s the perfect image of pastel for us personally.

Mei Pastel

A while ago, AnakJajan asked fellow Sahabat Jajan for recommended pastel in town, thanks to you all, we got a lot of legit good pastel. After trying many, here are some of our favorites that we find worth recommending.

Strawberry Pastel Ufo
Price: IDR 6.5k/ pc
Condiment: green chili
This is the second most mentioned brand, it happens to have to many hardcore fans and AnakJajan simply cannot agree more. In fact, it’s our number 1 favorite! It has crunchy flaky skin, not greasy, festive yet flavorful filling no sauce needed.

Pastel Kurnia at Kedai Ibu Djoko
Pastel Kurnia IDR 5k/ pc
Condiment: green chili & peanut sauce
Inside Kedai Ibu Djoko, usually around 12 or 1PM, you can find Pastel Kurnia. Since it’s available in limited amount, it sells out very fast. It’s classic with generous filling.

Pastel Kurnia at Kedai Ibu Djoko

The filling is already flavorful, we can enjoy it as it is without anything else, but of course it tastes great with chili and peanut sauce too. The peanut sauce was nicely made, classic but not something to crave for.

Pastel Wawa
Price: IDR 12.5k
Condiment: peanut sauce
Well, this is our number 2 favorite pastel. The fat round looking pastel from a place called Pastel Wawa. The shop is quite hidden, it’s expensive but it sells out fast! Talking about the special charm.

Pastel Wawa

Last time AnakJajan went there at 1 PM and it was already sold out. You better come early or if you’re going to buy in large quantity, you better make a reservation or call first.

Pastel Wawa

The pastel comes in very generous filling, that explains the almost ball like shape. If you eat it on its own, it’s good but not crazily good because what makes it special is the peanut sauce, they have THE BEST PEANUT SAUCE ever!!

Pastel Wawa

Thick luscious spicy nutty and flavorful sauce!! It goes well with the pastel that has simple seasoning. AnakJajan can easily say that Pastel Wawa has the most generous filling and the best tasting peanut sauce.

Pastel 23
Price: IDR 8k
Condiment: peanut sauce
If you’re up for classic pastel, Pastel 23 might be the answer. The pastel here has the most classic look with beautiful golden skin. For the filling, we’re not sure if it has chicken in it or not because it’s only dominated by glass noodle, egg white (yeah egg white only), and carrot. The peanut sauce unfortunately was too watery and not flavorful enough.

Fortunately the filling was flavorful with subtle sweet taste from generous amount of carrot, it was tasty on its own without any condiment needed, simple humble classic and tasty but personally for IDR 8k, we prefer IDR 6.5k pastel from Strawberry Pastel Ufo with more festive filling, well that’s just our personal preference.

Mei Pastel
Price: IDR 10k/ pc
Condiment: green chili
First impression, GREASY! Man oh man, it’s so greasy it looks like a ball of oil. Some Sahabat Jajan who recommended Mei Pastel told us it shouldn’t look that greasy, perhaps we were unlucky and got the greasy batch??

Surprisingly after trying, despite the oil, AnakJajan must say that it’s delicious. They have two variety Chicken Cheese & Curry Puff, we personally recommend you to try the classic Chicken Cheese.

Mei Pastel

The pastel has the MOST crispy flaky skin compared to others, as for filling even though it says chicken cheese, the cheese taste was very subtle but in a good way, perhaps to give the filling a nice savory taste. Seasoning was well balanced, savory and full of umami taste.

Pastellia
Price: IDR 7k
Condiment: peanut sauce + green chili
Pastellia has a few outlets both in Jakarta and Tangerang. AnakJajan have been a big fan of their Siomay but we never tried their pastel but since we got so many recommendation, we decided to give it a try.

Pastellia
Pastellia

First impression, thick pastel skin, then less generous filling, it was alright, enjoyable but not memorable honestly we almost remove Pastellia from the list, however, our opinion changed after we add their peanut sauce. The pastel instantly got leveled up after we pour the sauce. The spicy nutty sauce was tasteful and bold enough to compensate the pastel, Pastellia has second best peanut sauce after Pastel Wawa.

Pastellia

Pastel Croissant
Price: IDR 10k
Condiment: green chili
It’s pastel and croissant hybrid creation. As the name suggests, the pastel skin does has this kind of flaky texture typical croissant, it’s flaky but not as crunchy as we expected. Available in Chicken and Mushroom, AnakJajan personally prefer Chicken one, nicely minced, savory and generous filling. For us the downside would be skin thickness, we prefer it thinner.

Ma’Cik
Price: IDR 6.8k++
Condiment: chili sauce
Saving Ma’Cik for the last, the classic and most recommended Pastel by Sahabat Jajan. Skin is thin, golden, crunchy and not greasy with just the right amount of filling with potato, carrot, glass noodle, egg, and shredded chicken. It’s good on its own but their legendary chili sauce surely makes an awesome complement.

Thank you for reading. Hopefully you’re happy with the list, actually there are other recommended pastel that we’ve tried but AnakJajan decided not to put it in the list due to some reason (inconsistent quality, product only made by order so it’s quite a hassle if we only want to grab one or two pieces, etc). Of course besides the list above, there STILL MANY YUMMY PASTEL OUT THERE, we just cannot put everything in it. If you got other recommendation, don’t hesitate to share it on the comment section below. Let’s Jajan!!😊

  1. Pastel Greess adanya di Pluit Village, Gajah Mada Plaza, LTC foodcourt, Season City. Ini kulitnya tipis, beda sm yg lain, isiannya full. Bumbu kacang nya pedes mantep.
