Raise you hands if you love Korean food!! Sahabat Jajan, what do you know about Korean cuisine? Besides Kimchi, Ramyun, Bibimbap and BBQ, Korean cuisine is actually very diverse and rich. In this post AnakJajan gonna show you wide variety of Korean cuisine that you can find in Korea especially Seoul. We’ll explain and show you what kind of food are Jimdak, Sundubu, Mandu, Kimbap, etc actually.
AnakJajan visited South Korea in November 2015 during the peak season of autumn and this trip was one of our most memorable trips in 2015. Scenery was awesome, food was even more awesome! Everyday was happy tummy day!
During our trip, we notice the high and positive responses from all of you on our #AnakJajanKOREA posts on instagram. I guess maybe because many of you can relate it to the Korean movies/ shows/ music that you guys enjoy.

In this post, we’ll going to take you on a virtual culinary tour at Korea. Let’s start the tour, shall we?? 🙂
1. BIBIMBAP
Bibimbap is one of the most common Korean food that you can find easily in Jakarta. It’s a signature Korean mixed rice bowl dish. Bibimbap normally consists of rice topped with various vegetables plus meat, egg and gochujang (red pepper) paste. You have to mix it well before enjoying it.
Where to get Bibimbap: Gogung – Myeongdong Branch (고궁 – 명동점)
37, Myeongdong 8ga-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul
서울특별시 중구 명동8가길 27 (충무로2가)
Menu: – Jeonju Traditional Bibimbap KRW 11.000 – Grilled Pork Jeonju Style KRW 18.000
You can find Bibimbap anywhere in Korea easily. AnakJajan had our bibimbap at Gogung where they provide genuine taste of Jeonju Bibimbap, besides Bibimbap they also serve other signature Jeonju dishes just the the spicy Jeonju Grilled Pork.
2. MANDU
Mandu is Korean version of dumplings. You can find steamed, fried and grilled version of Mandu in Korea, normally they filled the dumpling with minced meat and green onions.
Where to get Mandu: Myeongdong Kyoja (명동교자)
29, Myeongdong 10-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul (Myeong-dong 2-ga)

3. JJANGMYEON or JAJANGMYEON
I guess lots of you who love to watch Korean drama are familiar with this black noodle. It’s Korean Chinese cuisine, a simple yet tasty noodle dish seasoned with thick rich black bean sauce. Normally the best dish to pair with Jjangmyeon is Tangsuyuk or deep fried pork with sweet and sour thick sauce.
Where to get Jjangmyeon: Gaehwa (개화)
52-5, Namdaemun-ro, Jung- gu, Seoul
서울특별시 중구 남대문로 52-5 (명동2가)
11:00 – 21:30
Menu: – Jjangmyeon KRW 5.000 – Fried Mandu KRW 5.000 – Fried Pork with Hot Pepper Sauce KRW 28.000 – Sweet and Sour Pork (Tangsuyuk) KRW 20.000
You can find Jjangmyeon in any Korean Chinese restaurant and Gaehwa with more than 50years of experience is one of it. Noodle was elastic but we found the black bean seasoning was a bit boring and not rich enough. To accompany the noodle, we opted Fried Pork with Hot Pepper Sauce instead of Tangsuyuk because we were curious and it was a bad decision, the whole fried pork dish tasted like chili oil, luckily fried mandu were delicious.
Jjangmyeon KRW 5.000, Fried Mandu KRW 5.000, Fried Pork with Hot Pepper Sauce KRW 28.000Jjangmyeon KRW 5.000Fried Pork with Hot Pepper Sauce KRW 28.000

4. KIMBAP
Kimbap stands for kim/gim (sheets of dried seaweed) and bap (rice), it is a simple Korean seaweed rice roll with various ingredients inside. (Please check Gimgane Myeongdong at point no. 5 for recommended place and more picture of Kimbap)

Menu: – Jjangmyeon KRW 6.000 – Mandu KRW 4.500 – Assorted Kimbap KRW 4.500 – Sundubu Jjigae (Spicy Tofu Stew) KRW 6.500

We were very hungry and almost over ordered (plus it was raining), Kimbap was very delicious with generous filling, mandu was very juicy and yummy, sundubu jjigae was very comforting but the winner would be their jjangmyeon with fantastic rich black bean sauce, one of the best jjangmyeon we’ve ever had! Period! If you guys are going to myeongdong, we highly recommend you to visit this small little eatery, great food, wide variety and affordable.

10. DOSIRAK
If Japan has bento, then Korea has dosirak or packed lunch box. Classic dosirak usually uses this type of old school metal box where children used to shake the content of lunch box to mix all ingredients well before eating it.

This is what I call messy messy good!! Mukshidonna Tteokbokki Samcheongdong is one of our most fav places in Seoul, their tteokbokki was the best we’ve ever had! Unlike other tteokbokki with thick rich sauce, here the sauce was more watery or soupy, it goes really well with ramyeon noodle. And please pleaseeee don’t forget to order their fried rice for an uhhhmazing ending! (Definitely the best fried rice we’ve ever had in Korea)
12. BEEF CROQUETTE
Well, this isn’t typical Korean dish but we just haveeee to put it in the list because it’s sooo good and recommended!! AnakJajan randomly bumped into this croquette shop in the hip Hongdae area. At first I was unwilling to try it but Mr. Jajan insisted so we ordered the Hamburg Steak, it’s a deep fried beef patty with mozarella cheese inside and surprisingly it tasted heavenly!! Meat was seasoned perfectly and very juicy, it tasted even better with the melted cheese, oooh sooo good!!
I’m sorry I couldn’t give you the detailed address as I didn’t know the exact address, as far as I remember it’s not very far from the Kiss the Tiramisu ice cream place in a small alley, so if you happen to find this shop, please please try it!
13. CHIMAEK or KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN

Where to get Chimaek: Two Two Chicken
Menu: – Beer 500cc KRW 3.500 – Half & Half (Original & Spicy) KRW 19.000 – Soju 3.000
We found KFC at Two Two Chicken was disappointing, chicken was not juicy, seasoning was also mediocre. We won’t put detailed address since it’s not very recommended honestly.

The chicken was cooked nicely till very tender and fall of the bone easily. This whole dish is very comforting, delicious and nutritious at the same time. Don’t forget to enjoy their homemade kimchi that is very delicious (one of the best kimchi I’ve ever had to be honest)
20. JAPCHAE
Japchae or stir-fried glass noodle, is a common fried noodle dish in Korea made from sweet potato noodle that has elastic chewy texture a bit similar with Indonesian Sohun or tapioca vermicelli. They usually stir fry the noodle with sesame oil, soy sauce and vegetables. You can find it easily in most restaurants in Korea.

21. KOREAN BARBECUE
Korean BBQ seems to be the most common Korean restaurant that you can find in Jakarta. Usually the meat is grilled on top of charcoal and served with fresh vegetables, ssamjang or spicy dipping sauce, sesame oil plus salt and various banchan or side dishes such as kimchi. The best way to enjoy Korean BBQ is to wrap the meat with a bit of ssamjang, kimchi and rice with vegetable such as lettuce.

The ribs were sinfully delicious and finger licking good, Mr. Jajan enjoyed it so much. Don’t forget to order fried rice for amazing ending.
