[SPAIN] ALCALÁ DE HENARES – Travel Diary

Continuing #AnakJajanSPAIN travel diary, after long flight for almost 18hours from Jakarta to Hong Kong to Madrid, AnakJajan arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport. Our first stop is Alcalá de Henares, the world heritage city in Central Spain, Northeast of Madrid.

Feeling refreshed after restful sleep in Cathay Pacific Business Class, AnakJajan simply cannot get more excited to explore Spain, one of the top destinations on our bucket list.

On the whole trip for almost 2 weeks of trip arranged by Spain Tourism Board, AnakJajan travelled and explored so many beautiful cities in Spain and we got to say, España te amo!!❤️🇪🇸

Our first destination is Alcalá de Henares, the beautiful city is located less than an hour of car ride from Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport.

Known as world heritage city, AnakJajan instantly fell in love with the city, the charming old buildings and landscape, the strong history, everything was charming.

Parador de Alcalá de Henares – Hotel
For the first night, we stayed in Alcalá de Henares at Parador de Alcalá de Henares Hotel. The hotel is very charming, it’s situated in an old historical building where they combine traditional design with modern facilities.

Besides the spacious and cozy room, the best part for us would be the location, it’s located strategically near popular sightseeing spots in walking distance.

El Casino Restaurant
Our lunch was scheduled at 1PM in El Casino Restaurant located at the Main Square of Alcala De Henares. The restaurant was still empty when we arrived, since locals have their lunch normally at 3PM, wow that’s an interesting finding!😱😄

Another interesting finding, lunch or midday meal is considered to be the largest meal of the day, the portion is definitely large and it usually comes with multiple courses, so you gotta prepare your belly😁

If I’m not mistaken, there were more than 5 courses for our lunch and it ended with coffee and dessert. To my surprise, Spanish food turned out to be very enjoyable and suitable for us, we enjoyed all of the dishes. Our tummies are going to be very happy for the rest of 2 weeks of the trip.😋

restaurant is packed at 3PM

After lunch, AnakJajan had a walking tour to the popular sightseeing spots in Alcala De Henares, we just love how close all of the famous spots are, within walking distance, and the architecture is simply mind blowing, beautiful on every corner.

Plaza de Cervantes
If you are planning to visit Alcala De Henares, AnakJajan recommend you to start from Alcala De Henares. The beautiful starting point is surrounded by picturesque garden, restaurants, and historical buildings, and lots of events are held there throughout the year.

Calle Mayor
In Spanish, Calle Mayor means Main Street, it’s fun to have a walk at the street doing some shopping, snacking, or eating. There are some historical spots on the street as well.

Me and Mr. Jajan always love crowded street like this, we love to do people watching, to see culture, to see how local interact with each other, etc. It’s fun!

Can you spot the bird?

Llao Llao
On the street, AnakJajan spotted Llao Llao Frozen Yogurt, do you know that Llao Llao is originated from Spain?? AnakJajan couldn’t resist outselves from getting the yummy frozen treat, we got Medium with 3toppings for EUR 3.40, short to say, it tastes much better in the country of origin!😋

Churros Con Chocolate
We also spotted Churros Con Chocolate EUR 2.10 from local cafe, another Spanish local favorite for breakfast, so we decided to give it a try, it’s deep fried crispy thin churros served with thick rich hot chocolate.
The taste was undeniably good, we got crispy yet chewy texture from churros, and thick almost pudding-like bitter sweet rich taste from chocolate, a must try indeed!!

Universidad de Alcala
The University of Alcalá is a public university located in Alcalá de Henares that has a very long history.
The university with magnificent architecture is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the longest standing European universities. You can have a tour around it.

Torre de Santa Maria
From Torre de Santa Maria, we got beautiful city views from above.

For us personally, Alcalá de Henares is more of a touristy city (in a good way), you get the relaxed peaceful vibes from the beautiful landscape and historical buildings. It’s a great city to visit for 1 or 2 days.

Capilla del Oidor

Parador de Alcalá de Henares – Restaurant
For dinner, it was arranged at the restaurant in our hotel, the dinner set includes local bread with olive oil, choice of starter, choice of main course, and dessert for EUR 35 (exclude beverage).

The food came in surprisingly even bigger portion, gladly it was nice, our most favorite dish would be the Cannelon pasta stuffed with chicken and served with bechamel with mushroom and tender wheat, the seasoning was well balanced. Delicioso!

Located not very far from Madrid, AnakJajan got to say that Alcalá de Henares has an interesting charm and it’s worth to visit. Well, it’s the end of #AnakJajanSPAIN travel diary in Alcalá de Henares, thank you for reading and stay tuned for another Spain travel diaries!!
